MB Motorsports has named Carl Edwards to drive the #63 Ford Truck in the “Memphis
200” at Memphis Motorsports Park, June 22, 2002. Carl Edwards, a determined,
enthusiastic 22-year old racecar driver is looking forward to taking the next
step in his racing career. Over the past nine years, Carl has earned two Rookie-of-the-Year
honors, two NASCAR sanctioned Track Championships and 56 feature wins while
racing on dirt and pavement racetracks across the country. He has competed in
several types of racecars including mini-sprints, dirt and asphalt IMCA Modifieds,
Late Model Stock Cars, Baby Grand cars, and USAC Silver Crown cars.
We’re looking forward to Carl driving our #63 Ford Truck,” commented owner
Mike Mittler. “We have been watching Carl for 3 years. During recent testing
we were very impressed with his rapid adaptability to handle the heavier truck
and the quick feel and readability of the truck setup. We plan to take things
one race at a time and evaluate our progress as we go."
Carl began his racing career in 1993 driving mini-sprints. In 1994, he won
4 mini-sprint feature events and added 14 more wins in 1995 & 1996. He switched
to IMCA dirt Modifieds in 1997 and 1998, earning Rookie-of-the-Year honors.
In 1999, Carl gathered 13 feature wins and a NASCAR Track Championship in the
IMCA Modifieds, while also competing in the dirt Late Model division. 2000 was
another busy year for Carl as he competed in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series
in the Pro-Modified division winning 13 additional features, earned Rookie-of-the-Year,
and claimed his second NASCAR Track Championship. In addition, he won all 3
Sportsman division races that he entered. Carl moved to the Baby Grand division
and the USAC Silver Crown Series in 2001, winning 9 of 11 Baby Grand races he
entered. He also competed in 5 of 7 USAC Silver Crown pavement races, gaining
valuable pavement experience at racetracks such as Richmond, VA., Indianapolis,
IN., and Phoenix, AZ. Currently, Carl leads the 2002 Baby Grand National Points
as a result of winning 7 of 9 Baby Grand races. He also continues to compete
in weekly IMCA Modified races and the Silver Crown series, as time allows.
"I'm very pleased that Mike Mittler and the MB Motorsports crew have confidence
in me to drive their NASCAR Craftsman Truck," stated Carl. "I have been hanging
around the MB Motorsports shop for 2 or 3 years, helping where I can and hoping
that I might get a chance to drive. This is a dream come true for me. We'll
give it our best shot at Memphis next week."
The “Memphis 200” will be run Saturday June 22, 2002, at 12 o’clock noon (central
time) at Memphis Motorsports Park. The race will be broadcast live on ESPN television
and MRN radio.
