Carl Edwards Clinches Baby Grand Stock Car Association National
Championship
Carl Edwards enjoys driving racecars. In 2002, he has
raced dirt modifieds, silver crown cars, the #63 MB Motorsports NASCAR Craftsman
Truck, and dominated the Baby Grand Stock Car Series.
On Saturday, September 27, 2002, at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Carl became the
Baby Grand Stock Car Association national champion. Carl has driven the #9 car,
owned by Dwight Laxton (West Plains, MO) to 22 BGSC wins in 2002. At the national
sanctioned races he has won 5 of the 7 races he entered. At most races, he has
set fast time in qualifying, won the heat race, and won the feature, as Carl
did at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to clinch the national title. He is also the
current points leader in both the East and West Regions.
At his home track, Midway Speedway in Lebanon, MO. Carl has won 9 of the 12
races entered, with 11 top-5’s. However, Carl is in 2nd place, because
of missing 3 races that conflicted with his opportunity to drive the #63 MB
Motorsports Truck in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Carl can be the 1st
driver in the series to achieve a clean sweep, if he can win the points battle
at his home track.
A Baby Grand Stock Car is a 2/3 scale NASCAR Winston Cup car, with similar
suspension and adjustment capabilities. The car is 12 feet long, with a roof
height at 42”, and a wheelbase of 76-1/2”, weighing 1500 pounds minimum with
the driver. Power is provided by a 1250 cc, 4 cylinder, 4 stroke, 140 HP Yamaha
street bike engine. The series sanctions 250 races per season at 80 oval tracks
(3/4 mile or less) or road course tracks across the USA and western Canada.
The cars run as fast 140 mph.
"I've had a blast driving the Baby Grand cars," commented Carl. "I'm very proud
to be the national champion of the Baby Grand Stock Car Series."
Carl raced at tracks in Florida, Colorado, Nevada, Texas, Indiana, and Missouri
to win the national championship.
"Two races stand out the most for me this year," continued Carl. "In late June,
I ran a truck race in Milwaukee, then flew to my home track in Lebanon,
MO for the Baby Grand race that evening. We set a new track qualifying time,
won the heat race, but had to start at the rear in the 25th spot,
because I missed the drivers meeting. It was a 30-lap race and we were able
to pass one car per lap and take the lead with 4 laps remaining to win the feature.
That was pretty cool.”
"The other race I remember well was a road course outside of Dallas,
Texas. It was my first time on a road course. I guess I had the car on 2 wheels
a lot, but we were quickest in qualifying, won the heat race and won the feature.”
