Late Incident Mars Solid Run for
Waterloo Tool Storage Team at Chicago
What was shaping up to be one of the best runs of the season for the #63 Waterloo
Tool Storage team ended prematurely on Saturday night when an incident put driver
Larry Gunsleman into the wall and out of the race.
Running in 17th place with 25 laps remaining, Larry and the team
looked to be on the road to success in Chicago. Exactly what happened
next is still in doubt. The No. 4 truck either took the air off of the
No. 63 or bumped Larry, forcing him to lose control of the truck, spinning it
around, and backing into the wall.
The team was unable to get the truck back on the track before the checkered
flag flew, relegating the team to a 24th place finish.
"I felt good about the truck and was having a great run right up until the
incident," Gunselman said. "I hate that the race ended this way for us.
We got knocked out in Indianapolis through no fault of our own and the same
thing happened this weekend."
The team practiced well on Friday and qualified in 26th place.
Larry slowly worked his way past several trucks to run in the top-20 through
much of the race.
Crew Chief and Owner Mike Mittler commented, “Despite a worse than expected
finish this was a good run for the team. We all know that the finish would have
been very respectable if not for the wreck.”
Larry Gunselman is now 21st in the Craftsman Truck Series Driver
Standings and the team is 25th in the owners’ standings.
MB Motorsports’ next race will be the Silverado 350 at Texas Motor Speedway
on September 15, 2001. ESPN & MRN will provide live coverage of the
event at 3:00 PM (central time).
